News from the Chess Team

Bremen Youth Team Competition U12 Season 2012/13
1st day`s play 10th November Willms Gymnasium Delmenhorst.

Our team , Gete II with Julien, Jennik, Paul, Lenne, Nick and Gregor , won Category B. They won both rounds 3:1 against Chessfreinds Bremen East III and 4:0 against St Joseph`s School I.
In the A Category Gete I with Moritz, Malte. Theo and Luis lost 1:3 against Chessfriends Achim I in the first round, but Moritz showed a lot of ingenuity in his game.
Theo, in his first competitive game outside of Gete School played valiantly for nearly two hours and it could have gone either way.
We had to do without Jakob because he is now playing for U12 Delmenhorst chess club.

Lower Saxony and Bremen Primary School Chess Championship 2012
Tuesday 20th November Hermann-Böse Gymnasium.

In contrast to the high number of participating teams of four from Bremen in the last contest, this competition was between fewer, stronger teams, each with eight players from Lower Saxony as well as Bremen. Finkenberg primary school from Aurich were the winners.
We ended the seven round tournament in 6th place, beating our `arch-rivals` Baumschulenweg!
The third graders from Gete had very little experience of playing in tournaments, something that is going to be very different in the spring. Already Julien surprised us with 4 wins, 1 draw and no defeats!

What do Numbers Sound Like?

Is there a connection between math and music?
The children from our school were finding out the answer to this question from the music teacher Michael Bradke with his stage programme `Join In - Musical Numbers`.
With hands, feet and voices the children experienced addition with bars of music, odd and even numbers and counting with drumming. Especially fun for the children was hearing different musical interpretations of their own names.
This stage programme was only possible thanks to the support of our school club.

Ecumenical Celebration

This year we once again had an ecumenical religious celebration, concentrating this time on the story of Jonah and the Whale. Class 4b have been working hard on a theatre piece with Ms Witte and Ms Buchheim and performed this with the narration of Ms Zaremba from St Ursula`s Catholic Church.  The end prayer was given by Pastor Grosse  from  the Jona Evangelist Church. Once more the celebrations were accompanied beautifully by the choir (Ms Adler) and the parents`orchestra.

All Day Concept

At the school conference on the 19th November the all day school concept was adopted with a clear majority. Further information for anyone who is interested can be found on the Homepage under the menu point `school programme`.This all day school concept is central to the architectural plans currently being submitted for a new building in the school grounds. The new building will include a canteen , subject rooms and classrooms and should be in place by 2015.

Christmas Bazaar

This year was the school club`s first Christmas Bazaar. Christmas decorations were put up and the tables were full of wonderful handmade Advent decorations and Christmas gifts. The teachers`room served as cafeteria for the afternoon and lots of Gete parents turned up with their children to spend a couple of hours having coffee and cake. They all returned home with full bags!
It was well worth all the effort put in by the organising team as the school club made enough money to support future projects and ideas for the school.
Many thanks to all!

Book Box Festival

Since February there have been two big boxes of books in every classroom.
At the Book Box Festival every class introduced their favourite books. Eleven books were brought to life as a series of pictures, scenes from the books were acted out, or extracts simply read aloud. This was a great way to motivate all the children taking part to keep on reading.
The books were on loan from `Mobili Libri` and Ms Mierig also presented this event.

Experimenting with Everyday Objects

Can a paper-clip swim? Can you blow a tin-foil ball when it is in a bottle? How does a tea-light ride a lift?

After  three days of the `Experimenting with Everyday Objects`project the pupils of Gete School have the answers. There were twenty stations for the children to perform different experiments. They discovered that it is very difficult to blow out a candle through a funnel or to blow up a balloon that is in a bottle. They built jellybaby submarines and  made an oboe out of a drinking-straw.

The kids were very enthusiastic participants in this project and it was just a shame it was only three days; the pupils would have been happy to carry on experimenting !

Here in the school they have also been looking at the everyday life of the Kuna Indians. They have made Indian boats and model canoes and learned the canoe songs as well. They have been playing pan pipes and trying papayas and coconuts. Red Riding Hood at Gete

How to play Red Riding Hood, Mother and Grandmother when all the actors are men? Of course, with things from the clothes recycling container! Axel Brasgalla and Tom Habben transformed the familiar fairy tale by using things that are  normally thrown away. The result was a theatre performance without a moral point but with lots of humour. The children thanked the two actors with enthusiastic applause!
